A major new study from Anthropic cuts through the noise on AI and employment. The findings are more nuanced than the headlines suggest, and there are clear lessons for business owners right now. AI is Reshaping Jobs - But Not How You Think...
AI is Reshaping Jobs - But Not How You Think: Every few months a new headline warns that AI is about to wipe out millions of jobs. Most of those predictions are based on what AI could theoretically do, not what it's actually doing in real workplaces, right now. Anthropic's new research paper, published in March 2026, is one of the first studies to seriously look at that gap. And the findings should change the way you think about AI in your own business.

The gap between theory and reality
The study introduces a concept called observed exposure, a measure that combines what AI is theoretically capable of with what people are actually using it for in professional settings. It's a much more honest benchmark than the scary statistics you usually see.
The headline finding? AI is still a long way from reaching its theoretical potential.
In computer and maths roles, for example, AI could theoretically handle up to 94% of tasks. In practice, observed usage covers just 33%. That gap exists because of real-world friction: legal requirements, human verification steps, software integration challenges, and the simple fact that change takes time.
What this means for your business: the window between what AI can do and what it's actually doing is your runway. You have time to adapt, upskill, and build AI into your workflow strategically, rather than reactively.
Which jobs are most exposed?
The research ranks occupations by how much of their actual day-to-day work is already being handled by AI in professional settings. Here are the top ten, including one that will be very relevant to many of you:

Marketing specialists sit fifth on this list. The tasks being automated include report writing, data analysis, and translating findings into copy. Exactly the kind of work that eats up hours every week. If you're already using AI for first drafts, performance summaries, or scheduling content, you're ahead of the curve.
Who is actually at risk?
Here's where the research surprises most people. The workers most exposed to AI aren't low-paid, low-skill employees. The most exposed group is more likely to be highly educated, more likely to be female, and earns around 47% more on average than the least exposed group. Knowledge workers, people doing language-heavy, information-dense jobs are more exposed, not less.
That doesn't mean displacement is inevitable. It means the nature of those roles is shifting, and the people in them need to shift with it.

The Early Signal: Junior Roles are Quietly Shrinking
The most concrete finding in the study is this: there's been a 14% drop in the rate at which businesses are hiring 22 to 25 year olds into AI-exposed roles since ChatGPT launched in late 2022. Unemployment overall hasn't changed significantly, but the entry-level pipeline is contracting.
Why? Because AI is absorbing the tasks that junior hires used to handle, first-draft copy, data collation, basic report writing. Businesses aren't laying people off. They're simply not backfilling those entry-level positions when people move on.
That's a quieter kind of disruption, but it's a real one. And it's already happening.
So what should you actually do?
The honest answer is: start treating AI as infrastructure, not a novelty. The businesses that will be in the strongest position over the next three to five years are the ones that build AI into their core processes now, not as a bolt-on, but as a genuine part of how they operate.
That means looking at where your team spends the most time on repeatable, language-based tasks, report writing, client communications, content production, data summaries: and asking whether AI could handle the first 60% of that lift, freeing your people to focus on the judgement, relationships, and strategy that actually drive growth.
The gap between what AI can theoretically do and what it's actually doing is your opportunity. Use it.
